Xuanran is a costume designer-maker based in London, currently working across High-end TV and Film in the costume department. Before studying Costume Design at the London College of Fashion, she interned at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, while pursuing a BS Fashion Design degree at Drexel University in Philadelphia. This experience allowed her to work with fashion and textiles from different periods, familiarizing her with the structure of historical garments from the inside out.
But perhaps one of her greatest inspirations is film: As a child, she began collecting film magazines from the first half of the 20th century, drawn to their saturated and colorful prints. She spent much of her time watching films from the 1930s and 1940s, often finding them more real than life itself.
Her work weaves the details, colors, and styles of past eras with a personal and contemporary exploration of identity, as an East Asian, all viewed through the lens of film and art history.
